William Holl (1807-1871)
Holl was born in Plaistow, Essex, the son of engraver William Holl (1771-1838), from whom he received his initial training in the medium.
His speciality was stipple engraved portraits. In addition to his well-known copy of J M W Turner’s self portrait (right) he also produced plates for Edmund Lodge’s Portraits of Illustrious Personages of Great Britain and Charles Knight’s Gallery of Portraits.
