Samuel Middiman (1750-1830)
Middiman was a noted engraver of landscapes after his own designs and others. He initially studied engraving under William Byrne (1743-1805) and may also have received instruction from William Woollett and Francesco Bartolozzi.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1780 to 1797 and was for many years engaged by the publisher John Boydell. Bryan’s Dictionary identifies the following publications, ‘His ‘Select Views of Great Britain’ (1784-92) is a charming work, and was very popular both in England and on the continent; it was followed in 1807-11 by ‘Picturesque Views and Antiquities of Great Britain.’’
