Lumb Stocks RA (1812-1892)
Stocks was born at Lightcliffe, Yorkshire. In 1827 he began a six-year apprenticeship with engraver Charles Rolls (1800-c. 1856) in London. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1832, becoming an Associate Engraver in 1853 and full Academician in 1872.
According to Bryan’s Dictionary, ‘He was perhaps the last of the old school of engravers in the pure line manner, and his long series of plates, executed in this style, felicitously interpreted the best paintings of his day.’
