William Monk RE (1863-1937)
Monk was born at Chester and studied there at Albion House and at the Antwerp Academy. A noted printmaker and painter in oils and watercolours, Monk was elected a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers (RE) in 1899. He exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy, the Walker Gallery, London and at the RE.
In 1902 Monk published the first of his calendars (known as Calendarium Londinese or the London Almanack). The annual prints continued to be published (by Monk and later artists after his death) until 2004. We have the 1934 edition available in our gallery here.
