William Home Lizars (1788-1859)
Lizars was born in Edinburgh, the son of the engraver Daniel Lizars. He initially trained as an engraver under his father before studying art, alongside David Wilkie, at the Trustees’ Academy, Edinburgh.
In 1812, he showed the paintings Reading the Will and A Scotch Wedding at the Royal Scottish Academy. Both were admired and later acquired by the Scottish National Gallery.
According to Redgrave, ‘The loss of his father at this time, left a widow and large family dependent on the [engraving] business, and he sacrificed his higher hopes in art to carry it on.’
Lizars was a founder member of the Royal Scottish Academy.
