William Henry Mote (1803-1871)
William Henry Mote was a noted line and stipple engraver, principally of portrait subjects.
Mote worked in London, initially being apprenticed to Charles Heath (1785-1848). He produced a number of plates for Edmund Lodge’s Portraits of Illustrious Personages of Great Britain and an engraving of Greenwich Hospital for George IV, amongst much other work.
He is recorded in some sources as both William Henry Mote and W T Mote (the example right bears the name W T Mote). The confusion is thought to arise from a typesetter’s mistake in using an erroneous ‘T’ instead of an ‘H’.
