Arthur Heslop (1891-1955)
Heslop was born at Newcastle upon Tyne and spent the first few years of his life in Egypt with his family. This early exposure to North Africa may have influenced some of the subjects in our collection of works by the artist.
Back in Britain and following his schooling on Jersey, Heslop studied art under Richard George Hatton (Professor of Art and after whom the Hatton Gallery was named) at Armstrong College (now the University of Newcastle). As Marshall Hall describes (The Artists of Northumbria, 2005), ‘At the end of his studies he remained as a member of staff, subsequently becoming master of engraving and design at the School of Art… Heslop was one of the finest etchers produced by Northumbria, and in addition to teaching many young local artists his skills, exhibited his work at the Royal Scottish Academy; the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle, whose Artists of the Northern Counties exhibitions he contributed to for many years.’
Hall goes on to note (as some of the pictures on this site illustrate) that Heslop was a master of nautical and marine subject matter and he enjoyed painting and sketching on the continent during his annual holidays. Towards the end of his life, he shared an exhibition with Sophia Mildred Atkinson at the Hatton Gallery.
