Robert William Billings (1815-1874)
Billings, an artist and architect, was born in London and, from the age of thirteen, was apprenticed to John Britton (1771-1857). He became an exceptional artist and engraver of architectural subjects including Durham and Carlisle Cathedrals.
Other works include The Baronial and Ecclesiastical Antiquities of Scotland, first published between 1845 and 1852 and Illustrations of the Architectural Antiquities of the County of Durham, 1845.
Eventually, he gave up his artistic practice to concentrate on architecture. Billings rebuilt the Church of St John the Evangelist, at Low Crosby, Cumbria and restored the chapel of Edinburgh Castle amongst other works.
