Noel Lemire (1724-1801)
Lemire was born at Rouen in 1724. He studied engraving under Jacques-Philippe Le Bas (1707-1783). He engraved plates for numerous publications including Jean de la Fontaine’s Contes, 1762 and Ovid’s Metamorphoses. This latter publication was published by Lemire and Pierre François Basan between 1767 and 1771. Additional illustrative work included plates for Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Julie.
Of the ‘talented’ group of 18th century French engravers, Hind recognised Lemire, together with Nicolas Delaunay and Joseph de Longueil, ‘for the excellent preciseness of their work.’
