
Joseph Simpson (1879-1939)
Simpson was born at Carlisle and studied at the Glasgow School of Art. Prior to taking up art full-time, Simpson worked for a printing firm in Carlisle. In 1918 he was appointed an official war artist for the RAF in France.
Simpson exhibited widely including at Venice, Munich, Florence and Stockholm. One of his notable works is a portrait of Frank Brangwyn, his friend and neighbour.
