John Lekeux (1783-1846)
John Lekeux was an artist and engraver initially trained in pewter manufacture under his father. An experimental engraving on copper led to him being transferred to the artist James Basire (1730-1802) for the remainder of his apprenticeship.
Lekeux was noted for his line engraved architectural subjects. He contributed plates for Augustus Charles Pugin’s Specimens of the Architectural Antiquities of Normandy, 1827, Examples of Gothic Architecture, 1831 and J P Neale’s Memorials of Oxford, amongst others.
Redgrave suggests that Lekeux’s engraving of Easby Abbey after Turner (right) and Rome after the same artist, ‘are probably his best works.’
His brother Henry Lekeux (1787-1868) and son John Henry Lekeux (1812-1896) were also engravers.
