Francis Engleheart (1775-1849)
Engleheart was a noted line engraver, particularly of small prints used to illustrate books, from London. He took his apprenticeship under Joseph Collyer (1748-1827) before becoming assistant to the engraver James Heath (1757-1834).
According to Redgrave, ‘About the beginning of the 19th century he engraved the portraits for a collection of the English poets. He then engraved after [Robert] Smirke R.A., including nearly 30 designs for his ‘Don Quixote’. His most important works are his ‘Duncan Gray’ after [David] Wilkie and ‘Sir Calepine Rescuing Serena’ after [William] Hilton.’
