Sir Francis Ivan Simms Tuker (1894-1967) – F S Tuker
Lieutenant General Sir Francis Ivan Simms Tuker KCIE CB DSO OBE was a military commander in the First and Second World Wars. During the Great War he served in and captained the 2nd Gurkha Rifles in Flanders, Egypt and Persia. He commanded the 34th Indian Infantry Division and the 4th Indian Infantry Division in the Western Desert and in Italy in World War II, notably at the Battle of Monte Cassino.
He was a poet and author of books on military theory. His works include The Desert Rats and other Verses (1944), The Pattern of War (1948) and Gorkha: the Story of the Gurkhas of Nepal (1957).
F S Tuker was also an artist of considerable ability as our collection of etchings illustrates. His work in this medium shows the assured touch of artist who fully understood the technique’s possibilities. Dating from the early 1930s, the etchings reflect Tuker’s time in India and England.
