Charles Grave
(1886-1944)

Our extensive gallery of Punch cartoons can be found here.

Charles Chas Grave Signature Cartoonist
Charles Grave (1886-1944)
Grave was born in Barrow-in-Furness and, following schooling in London, submitted cartoons to numerous publications including Daily Graphic, Sporting Life and Tatler. Nautical humour was his focus, as Price (1957) noted, ‘Charles Grave, who began contributing [to Punch] as early as 1912 but did not become frequent until the Thirties, when for a time he was relief cartoonist, did for ships and foreign ports what [Frank] Reynolds did for suburban householders and village cricketers. His work was very popular.’
