Alfred Edmeades Bestall (1892-1986)
Born in Burma, Bestall studied at Birmingham Central School of Art and served in Flanders with the Royal Army Service Corps in the First World War. After the war he completed his studies at the Central School of Art, London. In addition to his work for Punch, Bestall contributed cartoons to numerous publications and is best known today as the illustrator of the Rupert Bear strip in the Daily Express from 1935 to 1965.
